She was a child of the depression born in seventeen
Raised up on a farm above the dell’s outside of Racine
Although her family never lacked for much
the times they were lean
She had a vision in her head and a will to follow her dreams
Carry on,
Carry on,
Carry on
So she cut loose of her family bonds and headed out west
She married a handsome man there was little time for rest
They had a child in ’54 but it was hard to comprehend
When a few years later she lost her man and had to start over again
She held it all together she had a vision to keep alive
A son to raise new man to love she stuffed her heart ache down inside
The life she carved out for herself looked like the American dream
But her son saw things differently and left when he was seventeen
Well the wheels of time stop for no one and now she is 86
I wonder does she look back and ask was it worth all the risk
And although they still see differently her son is by her side
Helping her to sort things out with the changing of the tide
Carry on
Carry on
Carry on
Carry on
